If STM is equipped with a potentiostat, STM scannings can be conducted during an electrochemical experiment, which is called as electrochemical scanning tunneling microscope(EC-STM). In the electrochemical experiment, because Faraday current flows through the STM tip, the tunneling current is perturbed. In order to exclude the current by the unwanted electrochemical reactions from the tunneling current, all except the very end of the tip must be insulated from the solution.
